i think John Curl was very right in saying that many musicians listened to 'the sound of music' not music itself. There's no doubt that musicians can detect sophisticated sounding nuances, but so do many non-musicians. It's the intention and emphasis that matter not the detection. Further, half of musicians are below average. And knowing a few, i've concluded that below-average musicians rarely listen , and consequently rarely express the soul and emotions. The best pieces that a musician I know play is always ones that he/she can emotionally connect. That does translate into listening to a reproduced piece of music. I think one will have to be explicitly an audiophile, at least until it comes his intuition, as it doesn't come naturally.
