But you don't see too many people coming in and asking whether they should buy a CD player. It's considered a "given".
I'll add to my earlier statement: any system without a CD player is broken, imo. You need both, as there is too much GREAT music that is only available in one format or the other. I don't think either should be considered a -substitute- for the other. They are complementary.
Even when a particular item is available in both formats, it is usually quite a bit easier or cheaper to get it on one vs. the other. My personal taste, and it's only taste, is usually to get vinyl when both are available and equivalent. But "both available and equivalent" doesn't happen too often.
