I'm slowly trying to move towards tri-amping my main system and am looking for a high powered SS amp for the mids. Just for reference, the amp will be covering from appr. 70 / 80 Hz up to about 2500 to 3K. I would like to keep it around $7-800 or so on the used market. It must be capable of appr. 350-450 wpc at or below 4 ohms with no problems. It will be driving two dynamic drivers that do not present difficult loading other than an appr. 4 ohm impedance. I already have my amp for the subs (Perreaux PM 3150B 550 X 2 @ 4). I am in the process of finding an amp for the tweeters now, but am steering towards a B & K ST-202 (150 X 2 @ 8). These typically have a pretty smooth "tube-like" sound for a SS amp and should blend well with my slightly bright tweeters. It surely doesn't hurt matters that it's also easy on the wallet !!! My preamp of choice is an oldie and some of you may remember it, the ORIGINAL "straight wire with gain". Can you guess what it is ? Does the AGI 511A ring a bell ? It is very neutral and can reproduce transients faster than any other preamp that i have ever heard. The signal going to the amps will be divided by a Marchand three way electronic crossover. The two pieces listed below caught my eye, as they appear to meet the above criteria. I am also open to honest suggestions, so feel free to speak up.
Anyone familiar with the build & sound quality of either the Bedini 250 MK II or the Counterpoint 220 ? I have seen the same model Bedini amps priced VERY differently from one another on the used market, depending on where you look. This makes me wonder about them. I have never seen any reviews or mentions about them one way or the other.
While i know that Counterpoint is out of business, their 220 amp is a hybrid model that caught my eye. It uses tubes on the input and mosfets on the output. It is a high current design and should sound pretty decent given my past experience with Counterpoint preamps. Anyone have any experience with this particular amp ?
I appreciate any and all info that you can post pertaining to the gear mentioned or general comments regarding either company. Thanks in advance and sorry for the novel !!! Sean
