the two leads are called to communicate non-verbally most of the time. There is always an element of this in the craft of acting, but here the words are few, while the postures, gestures and expressions, are used to convey most everything. And they succeed. And as you said, the evocation of the period is pitch perfect. The story, such as it is, is a basic love story, but there will always be basic love stories, and this one was in the top rank. The technical aspects are also carefully considered, the grain in the film that makes it look so much like a 50s throwback, the faces through rainy windows, the winter scenery. I thought it was all quite compelling.
