RE: I miss Monk

Monk was excellent.

The Mentalist was pretty good too, but the over-wrought Red John sub-plot took much too long to resolve. The whole change up with Patrick's disappearance, running off to Mexico, being caught, extradited and ending up as an FBI profiler was more upbeat and worked the last couple of years. Jane's emotionally damaged character gradually recovered over time which I thought was a great acting choice that breathed new life into the series.

If you miss Monk I'd highly recommend catching Elementary (entering it's fourth season this Fall). As a traditionalist, I resisted watching this series for a couple of years figuring it was just a campy over-the-top modernization of Sherlock Holmes that would trash Doyle's master detective. Heck, I can't bring myself to watch the CGI driven action films with Robert Downey Jr. reprising the Holmes's character without wincing (He should stick to Iron Man).

But, after my wife encouraged me to watch the first couple of episodes of the CBS series I was hooked. This series is actually a brilliant re-imagining of the character. Only the viewers are aware of how the original literary works relate to his behaviors.

In Elementary, the world's greatest detective has serious OCD issues (a'la Monk) and a substance abuse problem, has moved from the UK to modern day NY to escape his past, that Watson is a female caregiver/apprentice hired by Holme's father to help him recover and that he works as a police advisor solving crimes as therapy. If you can get on board with that you'll like it.

As I said earlier, I didn't think this series would work for me at all, but I've grown to appreciate Elementary as a modern masterpiece (poignant, often brilliant, with clever writing, interesting characters and appropriately complex mysteries). My 2 cents.

Cheers,
AuPh
