I think I solved it...

After closer reading it appears the choke lead in question gets hooked to pin 8 of the GZ-34, which I did but still had no bias voltage. This was traced to an unsoldered lead on the bias rectifier diode on the cap board. Damn, and I was so careful when I checked it out.

The amp is now stable with good bias and everything appears OK.

Now to put it in my system and try some music......
