Thanks for the advice. I picked up both units today. At first blush, I am impressed by this dinosaur. Although, as expected, the highs are a touch rolled off. The stereo separation is zilch (I think it may be traceable to an unlit tube).
However, to be succinct, I never knew FM could sound like this. I've been listening to a jazz station and the tone is incredible, especially acoustic bass; deep, clear and refined. Snare sounds awesome too. (I play bass, please excuse my bias for the rhythm section) Unfortunately, my classical station is in the midst of a pledge drive and I can't bring myself to listen to all that jabbering.
I should have picked up one of these years ago. I'll likely do some of the recommended mods in a month or two. I think I paid $400ish for my Denon 15+ years ago. The FM3's were $175 for the pair and they both work. Go figure. Looks like the Denon will be demoted to garage duty.
