From your description, the rectifier diode is *not* backwards; the cathode (marked) end should be connected to the transformer.FWIW, I have had good luck with Sovtek GZ34's although others complain about short life on these. I also think that the Svetlana EL34's are probably the best sounding new production tubes. That NOS stuff is expensive!
