Re: Why Does My DVD Player/DAC Combo Sound So Bad?

Hi,

My guess is that your problem is the transport, the digital cable, and/or the power cords to the DAC. I have heard some people say that both the DAC1.1 and the DAC2 are similar quality sound. I friend of mine has heard both and said that the DAC2 is far superior. What's the difference? Well, the DAC2 has totally new DAC chips, and a much better asynchronous upsampler that mostly removes jitter. The DAC1.1 is still jitter sensitive, despite the marketing literature. So, transports and the digital cable will affect the sound.

Have you ever heard a CD player on your system to compare it with? I mean, many CDs are just plain junk. I remember going from LP to CD 20 years ago, and being sooo disappointed.

I have found that even with the DAC2, which is a very good DAC, the power cords do affect the sound. Some affect it for the better -- others for the worse -- others just different.

I use a Toshiba 3750 DVD player with my DAC2, and the sound is very good! Now, I wouldn't call it overly airy (which makes me think of tube-like distortion), but I would call it very natural, open, and smooth, with good body to the sound!
