Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Hello, Marc.....

It looks as though we both had bad days.

But to your comments,

1) I am glad that you spent less money than might have been expected, and the fact that you feel that you can recover the money if necessary obviously lessens the risk.

2) Apart from perhaps getting your aux. input checked/improved, only time and use would confirm whether the lack in quality was due to "breaking in" requirements. I could make no suggestions that would be able to affect this.

3) Yes it is inconvenient to perform A/B home auditions, but I sincerely believe that this is the only reliable method of ensuring that equipment suits both you and your system. Everything else is a gamble, which by definition means that you can lose! Other folks that buy kit from dealers are not likely to be able to recover but a portion of their costs from web auctions, etc.

4) I am particularly concerned to hear about the problems with your lease. Friends I know have had what seem to be the same problems, and they have been caused great stress by them. I hope things turn out better for you.

5) I don't know about Johnathan Swift - it's just the way I talk!

6) I feel that the need for home audition is so strong (and the risk of disappointment so real for the alternatives), I felt I had to comment to underline the point. When I looked on Friday, there were no less than 23 entries on the then current page of this forum that were seeking advice prior to purchase! Now if these folks just use the feedback as a means of getting a short-list to audition from, then I would see few problems. Postings like "Model A CDP or Model B CDP?" however, do nothing to remove the concern that they may be trying to use recommendations by a third party as the decision-maker as to whether to purchase. See the comments on today's "General" forum.

As I say, I still feel that the above information is accurate. I do, however, accept that I could have been a touch more charitable in how I said it. As I said, maybe we'd both had bad days,

Bill H.
