The Bel Canto 1.1 is a pretty good DAC. I got a big improvement going from a Sony DVP7700 to a Sony 9000ES. Apparently the transport can make a big difference with the Bel Dac. The difference was kinda like what you described between your analog and digital system. A new cable and new DAC would take sometime to break in though.
