Re: 47 Laboratory or Audio Note ?

I have very direct experience with both the AN and 47 Labs DACs. I owned a AN DAC 1.1 that I very heavily modified - transformer coupling, upgraded DAC chip, transformer output stage using 5687 tubes, tube power supply, upgraded caps & resistors - the whole deal. The stock DAC 1.1 was unacceptable, very flat, uninvolving, poor dynamics. Getting it closer to DAC 4 specs made it excellent.

I changed, however, to the 47 Labs Progression DAC - as it is better, and very special. Mellow, but lots of dynamics, and a rather special magic.

In my second system, I am using the Shigaraki combo, actually I had one of the very first available, so I have relatively long experience. It is excellent, and clearly far better than comparably or even next level up AN. The sound is very clear with wonderful midrange, very good dynamics, smooth and non-fatiguing, very un-digital.

I have the greatest respect for the AN DACs, but value sonically dollar for dollar goes to 47 Labs.
