i absolutely agree with this statement, but see it in a slightly different way. i LIKE the slightly boring (refined?) taste of the TDA1545...thats why it was used in this dac over the 1543.
the 43 to my ears sounds rough and out of control even with a proper I/V stage. if the music is presented as such, i'm ok. i would just rather err on the side of *boring* vs. in your face and jumpy. (i do think the basic sound of the filterless 1543 is quite appealing though)
also, i think the power supply of the 1543 and 1545 type dacs is absurdly important, especially if we're just using a resistor for I/V conversion. batteries with series/shunt regulators are best, followed by batteries and good series regulators. it wasn't an accident batts were chosen to run the dac.
btw, i'm building that reclocking stage of yours one of these days....
