Re: 47 Laboratory or Audio Note ?

I have had a chance to compare 47 labs with a couple other DIY filterless designs. It is a highly tweaked sort of sound and not very constant from system to system. I like much more the TDA1545, which is a more accurate chip requiring far less power, but still as simple to use as the TDA1543.

AN is in its own ballgame. Tube output stage is a completely different design philosophy and results in a lot of ways to alter/hide response characteristics. These can be very rewarding but you also must be wary that there is a lot of opportunity to glorify the sound a bit (same is possible with SS, but it's not as easy). But that's the point of tubes, eh? (other than sex appeal)

As far as sounding like vinyl, the filterless designs typically have a much more focused, natural sound, which better conveys the sense of space like vinyl. Last night I was doing some vinyl / CD comparisons for a friend. My filterless DAC comes a HELL of a lot closer than my NAIM CD5 + Hi-Cap. Be careful, however, when picking - many filterless DACs have very, very poor dynamics. Use of passive I/V, imo, is just asking for problems unless it is designed with a specific type of system in mind.

Disclaimer is that I use TDA1545 with active I/V in my own DAC.
