Re: CEC TL-5100Z CD Player/Transport, any good?

I have used the 5100Z for about 2 years before parting with it. It was used both as a standalone player and as a transport paired with Bel Canto DAC 1.

Its strong point is that it has a very refined sound and almost none of the digital harshness. It does strings and vocals quite well. I think the internal DAC is very good, and the outboard DAC made only subtle improvements to my ears. Maybe they had too similar characters to complement each other.

The perceived weakness: it comes a bit short in dynamics and liveliness. I would characterize the 5100Z as "polite". I suspect that the mains regulator is weak - mine got fried and I had to get it repaired. The pick-up can be finicky and sometimes it refuses to read less than perfectly clean CDs.

At the end, I swapped it with a Rega Planet, and it turned out to be a much better match with the Bel Canto in my system. On the other hand, if you mainly listen to classical music and your taste is on the refined side, then the player will be worth auditioning.
