As Abe indicated, I upgraded the USB card in my DAC8 from the factory to current production. That allows me to use it with a USB Sonore ultraRendu directly. Previously, you had to run a Win or MacOS based endpoint using drivers and I had no interest in using either for playback. Instead, I used a USB to S/PDIF coverter which somewhat compromised transparency. I also have a battery powered Raspberry Pi4 as backup which is *almost* as good sounding and certainly offers a wonderful bang for buck value.Since it supports all of my digital content and has an excellent balanced class A audio output stage, I find no reason to upgrade to the tube based DAC9 or something even more exotic like dCS. Am not interested in the latest Chinese op amp based DAC-of-the-month.
Presumably, you're running yours balanced as that's how ARC gear is optimized. And perhaps it's time for you to enjoy the benefits of music server based playback. I have a single digital library accessible via ethernet or WiFi to players around the house and spend more time listening than shuffling plastic disks about. And easily rediscover forgotten friends in my collection by using random playback. :)
