ultraRendu - power supply?

I'm in the market for a new streamer. The DigiOne/rPi experiment has run it's course.

Considering the ultrRendu, how critical is it to get the UltraCap power supply along with it? Are there any less expensive power supplies that will suffice?

For that matter, are there other streamers in the $1k or less price range that I should consider?
