RE: Minor clarrification...

I don't believe anyone should think of buying an audio system with a strictly apportioned budget. Sticking with your notional 10K budget, let's say that it is decided that one third should be spent on the DAC. You go to a dealer and he has a 2,900 ( $,£ or euro) DAC which you hate the sound of. He stocks another DAC at 4,000 that you like. Do you say, I'll take the cheaper one even though I don't like it as it fits with the calculation or do you juggle your budget or try to find that bit extra?

Another problem with strict apportionment is that it won't necessarily scale in real life because audio products tend to clump in price brackets. Just because in a 10k system a component costs, say, 5K doesn't mean that for a 20k system budget there will even be that type of component available for 10K. It may well be that whilst there are 8 competing products at that 5K price point the next clump of products are in the 12-15K range.

Another difficulty in setting budgets by apportionment is that varying prices are often not due at all to features or performance but down to where the product is made (western country or third world) and how it is sold ( direct or via a distributor/retailer chain). These are variables that can impact the price of two otherwise almost identical products severely.

My advice? Have some kind of vague idea what you are prepared to spend but be prepared to shift ground and only buy what you like after hearing it. Sometimes it is even worth deciding to put the purchase off for a short time while you adjust your finances so that you can buy what you actually want and not just what you are sold.
