It is a 1984 design.
There has been a lot of discussion between Philips and Sony about bit depth and sample rate.
Philips thought 14 to be sufficient, Sony wanted 16 and Sony won.
The TDA1540 is a 14 bit DAC but with some tricks you can squeeze 96 dB dynamic range out of it.
