I've fooled with batteries for a number of different things. SLA'a are fine if you don't mind the weight and you can get them in just about any capacity. Their worst feature is they are non linear with regard to discharge rate and capacity. Meaning a heavy load uses up a lot of their capacity. NiCAD's are very good, although they have gotten more difficult to find. NiMH are good but only if you don't charge them all the way up, or discharge them too far. They used/use them in Prius, but they keep them in the 40% - 60% charge range. LiPO's are also good, but they require balancing which the chargers do automatically. Nano LiPO"S give you incredible discharge rates and capacity to weight ratios, but are only good for about 300 cycles.
There are some excellent chargers out there, that handle all chemistrys and have automatic capabilities that are really handy.
