RE: When playing a redbook CD on a SACD player

" it's the same laser reading mechanism ..."

It is the same mechanism but not the same laser or the focal length of the collimator lens. A bona fide SACD player mechanism physically swaps between the two (I am not referring to universal DVD mechanisms which are in the majority of lower priced players that will read SACD).

The player recognises the type of disc from reading ToC and will default to the correct OPU in accordance with this. So the selection of SACD in the menu in practice only relates to choosing the required layer of hybrid SACDs. Put a standard CD in and the player automatically selects the correct OPU configuration.
