...I would add that the SA-10's quoted output voltage is more or less dead on the original standard (Redbook)for CD replay which is 2V for a CD modulation of 0.0dBfs.So, as Kal implies, the problem may have been with the player that the SA-10 replaced.
If it sounds unpleasantly aggressive then the Cary pre-amp comes into question. I have checked the Cary's input specs but they are not particularly informative.
