RE: CD drives of CD players

Good questions. SS vs tube, that's an easy one. Only thing that is tube is last stage, basically a buffer. I'm a tube guy but I would only get one if I was directly driving amplifier or a passive preamp.

The rest, think of the player as drive, suspension, DAC, PS. Put your money into the DAC and consider standalone, that way you can use it for anything and you only pay once.

Suspension, which isolates the drive from vibration. Some of the high end players invest heavily in this, but most don't. If you are into deep bass, then good suspension may be worth it.

The deck, a lot of very good, high end players use inexpensive drives. And some of the high end decks, what you are paying for is long term reliability in harsh conditions.

PS - should be very good, but it supplies very little power. Most are very good. You won't see a lot of difference there unless it is low end.

One thing you can consider is buy a good DAC and get an older player used with a good reputation. Run digital from the player to your DAC.
