I use a <250$ SMSL SU-8 (v2) and it sounds fantastic to my ears (some people might find it slightly bright with the default filter setting, but that can be changed with the various filters available); SMSL has a top-of-the-line DAC at 1299$ (the D1) that should, according to the difference in price, be an absolutely amazing piece of kit if the price / performance ratio is anything like their 250$ SU-8.One could say that throwing that amount of csh on a brand like SMSL is foolish, but I'd be very curious to try it myself.
