Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Burr Brown (Texas Instruments).

Both the Esoteric UX-3 and the Accuphase DP-65 mentioned in this thread use Burr Brown DACs (PCM1704 and PCM1702 respectively). I don't think this is a coincidence, as implemented well, the quality of these mono DAC chips is well known.

Happy to be using them in my modern interpretation of an old-fashioned DAC (quality output stage, quality power supply), the Lite Audio DAC 83. Audio-gd also produce some great designs using these chips but if you want one, act fast as supply is dwindling.

You might also look for older CD players that have/had 'overbuilt' transport sections, such as those made by Teac, Pioneer, Sony and Philips. Although parts are not easy to come by (but not impossible), they were very well built to begin with and can often be revived with sufficient knowledge if they go down. It's rare for the laser mechanism themselves to stop working and it's more often the case that associated reading or control systems (and their caps) have aged to the point where they are out of specification. Replacing them can bring a transport back to life, for example.
