Depends on the market. Look at cassettes, for instance.

We're inclined to assume that the rest of the world reflects our first-world circumstances. It does not. You can still get cassettes fairly easily in the Global South, as well as DVDs and similar optical media, for example.

These markets are not as advanced as ours, but they are very large. The economics of that makes outcomes not as straightforward as we would like to believe.

I've been able to correspond with the manufacturer of my CD transport (Lite Audio LT-One) and learn what the (inexpensive) donor transport is. I bought four spare ones, and, since they're so cheap, will probably buy a few more while they're still around. I might advise the same to the OP.
