If you connect the Oppo to your Halo with an optical cable from the Oppo's digital output to the Halo's digital input and you get music from the Halo, it has to be using the Halo's DAC. It couldn't be doing anything else.
As to which would have better sound, only you can determine that.

PS. I have an Oppo BDP-105D connected to a Parasound Z-DAC with an optical cable and I like the sound of the Parasound DAC better than my Oppo's DAC. Unfortunately, my DSD files play only through the Oppo's DAC, but all other digital up to 24/192 plays though my Parasound DAC.
