I did get an email from Rotel stating that the drive units are still available. That's not bad for a model that was discontinued ten years ago. They also sent a list of authorized repair stations. The closest stations are Lincoln, NE which is about 3 1/2 hours away and St Louis, MO which, depending on where the suburb is, over four hours away.
I might be wrong but figuring on at least $60 for shipping and insurance both ways to either location and at least $80 for an hour's labor, the cost of repair could easily be over $200. There is a warranty repair station for some major brands on the South side of KC that could possibly deal with my problem but I still expect that it would be expensive enough to give a new product purchase some thought.
My other choice is to open up the case, clean and lube the rails, blow the dust off the laser lens, and hope that I do no harm. At least it's not plumbing, I hate working with plumbing.
