Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Repair or replace CD player

My Rotel RCD-1072 player has started to occasionally not read a disc upon first insertion. If I take the disc out and then replace, the disc will usually be read and play just fine on the second attempt. My initial suspicion is that the laser assembly is approaching the end of its lifespan after at least twelve years of use.

Replacement laser assemblies are available on Ebay for about $39 so its reasonable to assume the player can be repaired for a price. There are no Rotel service stations in the greater KC area and I have little experience in repair of electronics. Rotel does have a factory service facility.

So I'm faced with the question of whether it makes sense to repair a relatively old CD player that may or may not be trouble free in the future. I could also buy either an inexpensive ($300)CD player or the Cambridge dedicated transport ($449) to use until I can afford to make the switch over to a server. My Peachtree Nova 150 will continue to do the DAC function honors in either case.

Has anyone else faced a similar dilemna? If so,what was your course of action and did you end up pleased with your decision?
