you're most likely hearing differences between the two DACs. I cannot say that the 96/24 version of ?? would necessarily be better, but in my experience most are when the player field is level.
The Oppo was most certainly intended to be used with a monitor unless it was network enabled and you used their smartphone app.
Seems you're nailed solving the download-to-CD issue.
