I inadvertently left an Audioquest Toslink cable out on my shelf for a while so I figured I'd better clean it before plugging it in (we live in the heart of the city with some really dirty air). I blew the ends off with canned air and took a look through my little hand-microscope.
YUCK! There were dust motes and tiny fibers on and around the optical area. (It was easy to see by pointing one end toward the outside, allowing sunlight to run through the cable.) The crud was stubborn to remove too, it took a tiny delicate brushing with a fine camel-hair paintbrush and more canned air.
I assume a reduced transmission area still works but it seems as good good an idea as spritzing your RCA's with Caig once in a while.
