The "problem" with this type a calculations is they are only useful if the file is in a uncompressed lossless format like WAV or AIF.
My downloads are in general in FLAC.
To verify if I do get the right bit depth and sample rate, I use my media player.
This of course will tell you only if the download does have the right bit depth and sample rate.
Not to be mistaken for the source :)
