Hello, I have used a Theta Compli Universal player connected to an Audio Research DAC 7 for the past couple of years. The Theta Compli has both SPDIF RCA and AES/EBU digital outs. I have both versions of the Acoustic Zen MC2 digital cable in both SPDIF RCA and XLR terminations. These are connected between the Theta Compli and the Audio Research DAC 7. I have compared the two versions of the AZ MC2 digital cables and can hear a difference between the two cables/connections. I prefer the XLR over the SPDIF due to the fact that the SPDIF has slightly (and I mean slightly, we are splitting hairs here) more "edginess" to the sound compared to the XLR. The XLR sounds more "analog" like. Hope this helps.
FYI, any new cd, universal, bluray player that I buy must have the AES/EBU digital out feature or I won't consider it for my system.
