"Everything I read says to use EAC or dbpoweramp. How can this be? Do you know what iTunes would do differently?"
Absolutely no idea why iTunes is different.
For the past year I've been using EAC (because then it was considered the best) to rip, and assumed that those who knew what they were talking about knew what they were talking about.
In the process of trying to get the Squeezebox system to sound "right", I decided to see if I could get an improvement in ripping. Tried dbpoweramp and found it to sound just a tad better than EAC, even though all rips were verified as 100% accurate with AccurateRip. One day I was reading (can't remember where) that some Mac-users felt that iTunes made the best rips. My first thought was "just more of the usual Mac BS", but then felt "what the heck, give it a try". iTunes wasn't just a bit better, it was a great deal better. Eventually, I'll have both EAC and iTunes rips for most of my music. And maybe after that I'll shell out the 100 bucks for the full-blown dbpoweramp version.
It's almost like having a collection of CD-players, some better than others. Good thing HD space is cheap.
