Don't have any experience with the Benchmark, but I once thought my Squeezebox Receiver was the weak link in my system but don't any longer. The biggest improvements to the SR were:1. DIY power supply for Squeezebox, using large AC wallwart, schottky rectifiers, big blackgate caps & linear regulator. Huge improvement and probably the biggest overall.
2. Audio Note DAC Kit 2.1B with 6922 tubes. Very similar in SQ to Audio Note finished products.
3. 1.5 meter Stereovox HDXV digital cable. Excellent match to Squeezebox & AN DAC, and much better than the lower-level Audio Note cables I tried.
4. The discovery of iTunes for ripping CD's to .wav files has been the finishing touch. Much more clearer and natural sounding (with excellent retention of microdynamics) than others I've tried so far, such as EAC, dbpoweramp (trial install) and WMP.
5. Bob Crump (Audio Asylum) power cords. Big improvement over stock cords in every area!
As it stands now, my computer playback is very close in SQ to Audio Note lower-level CD players.
If you're interested, Audio Note Kits have DAC kits in your price range that are relatively simple to build as the main DAC board comes prebuilt and tested. Link to website attached below. (I'm not affiliated with AN Kits)
Edit: added point 5.
