Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: Why do you need a CD transport?

"If you are setting up a music server anyway, just use a PC or Mac."

- but i'm not....yet.

"Cheaper and better."

- maybe, maybe not. the jury is out. however, i respect that you have arrived at YOUR verdict.

"A stand-alone cd transport seems to be a waste of money. "

- not really. you are perhaps prematurely concluding that a mac or pc-based solution is the route of choice for a music server. otoh, i believe the "audiopile" future lies in the "sealed appliance" approach like a naim hdx, macintosh server, slim transporter, etc.

macs and pcs are noisy and require lots of "futzing".plus, their transports are usually weak. until hi-res music can be readily downloaded, i will need a tranport. for the moment, i will play my cds on it as i take the initial plunge into a separate dac.

however, YMMV.
