As a stand-alone source, the stock Toshiba walks all over my Data II/Cal Alpha (non-24/96). And, it competes favorably well even when a Digital Lens is inserted into the transport/DAC chain. As a transport-only, the stock Toshiba and the Data II are, to my ears, six of one, half-dozen of another. The Toshiba is somewhat more detailed and transparent, but lacking depth and tonal accuracy. On the other hand, the Data II sounds a trifle veiled by comparison, but a little more refined. For now I'm sticking with the Data II/Digital Lens/Cal Alpha. But that's a tenuous connection, and I'm savvy to the Toshiba direct-out mods. This is becoming fun.
