I bought an ART in the fall of last year to use with my old Rotel 955. I also bought all the parts to do a complete mod of the ART, but never got around to doing the mods. The only thing not stock on the ART is the Stancor power supply I've already got connected to it.Well, last week I purchased the 3950 (I needed a DVD player anyway), and yep, I think it sounds better than the stock ART. Better, yes, but I don't think it completely kills it. One or the other may sound better in a particular system, depending upon system balance. The 3950 does image MUCH better though.
I'm still going to do the ART mods; until then I'll reserve judgement as to which is the best. Folks, don't trash the ART just yet -- either one of these is a steal, and amaze me how little $$$ will get you good sound. They may not be the very best, but when <$125 can get you 90% there, who cares? I'll spend my money on more Cold Discs and LP's (and the house, wife, kids, etc.)!
