I cannot believe nobody mentioned the digital cable... IMO it has the biggest impact on the "harshness" of a two-box digital rig.You may want to try a low-RF-bleedthrough link such as the Luminous Audio Allegro or DH Labs D-75 or D-110 (the latter is AES/EBU). The DH Labs runs for only $100, and IMO will improve the sound more than switching to a better DAC. The DH Labs is now my favorite link, in both the S/PDIF and AES/EBU formats, and I've tried stuff 20x the price. (The DH Labs digital cables sound remarkably similar in both formats.) It sounds extraordinarily clean and sweet with both the $200 ART D/IO and the $5000 Prism DA-1 DACs. (The D/IO with the DH Labs will outperform the DA-1 with a mediocre digital cable.)
Other suggestions mentioned- Put the digital equipment on a dedicated power conditioner to isolate the digital noise from the analog equipment.
You may also want to try an Absolute Power Cord ($50) on your transport. It is the best power cord I've tried for CD transports, and I use 'em on the transports in both my systems.
Stay away from upsamplers. They will make the rig sound different, but not necessarily better. And the bad part is they add RFI to what is already generated by the existing equipment- so long-term listening will most-likely become worse. (If you want to use an upsampler, have it upsample 88.2 or 176.4 kHz, not 96 or 192 kHz, for the latter rates are *not* synchronous with the digital output data from 44.1 kHz Redbook CD playback, and the end-result would be loss of resolution compared to no upsampler.)
