I'm following you just fine. It is you that's misinformed. Track 3 on the XLO Test CD does not test for absolute polarity. It tests only for one speaker being out-of-phase with the other speaker. There's no way to be certain of absolute polarity through a listening test. The only way to be sure of absolute polarity is by using an oscilloscope to look at a pulse.

> Also, the OP really wanted was to find out what polarity state his CD TRANSPORT is in at a given time.

The only way to do this is by observing a pulse with an oscilloscope. If the pulse points up in both channels, absolute polarity is correct; if the pulse points down in both channels, absolute polarity is inverted.

If the pulse points up in one channel and down in the other, the two channels are out-of-phase with each other. However, this is not the same thing as absolute polarity. This is the type of polarity tested on Track 3 of the XLO Test CD.

Many people cannot hear absolute polarity. I cannot hear absolute polarity. I have a pair of Grado HP-1 headphones with polarity switches on each earspeaker and I cannot tell the slightest difference when both switches are up or when both switches are down. However, everyone can hear the difference when one switch is up and the other is down just like everyone can hear the difference on Track 3 of the XLO Test CD. When the sound is most diffuse, the speakers are out-of-phase with each other, but this has absolutely nothing to do with absolute polarity.

I can't explain this any simpler. If you still don't understand then you need to get an education.

Sorry!
