RE: About depth of field with digital

I appreciate your passion for depth of field and though not impossible to attain, why would you hang so much hope on a 24-year old product by a young Harley reviewer who hopefully has gained much savvy since that time?

Wouldn't it make more sense to hang your hat on a more recent review of the YG Acoustics speakers where reviewer Wes Phillips exclaimed, "a soundstage so big I felt like I could get up and walk around in it for an hour or so."? Paraphrased.

Needless to say, comments such as these are little more than intended hype or hype expressed by easily excitable reviewers.

No DAC or speaker (or any other component) in and of itself can generate such depth. Moreover, to the best of my knowledge, only the most extremely well-thought-out playback systems where not only each component is carefully selected but where also the most severe and universal distortions that plague every last system have been properly addressed and absolutely minimized.

Considering "high-end" is still in its infancy from a performance perspective, that alone should be a guarantee Harley heard no such thing in 1991. Unless perhaps his previous DAC's were grossly inferior K-mart types.

Considering the vast majority have yet to latch onto the universal distortions that plague every last system including the fact that neither reviewer appeared to even employ superior line conditioning (one of the necessities for minimizing distortions) should be a dead giveaway they were exaggerating their claims.

Just like in a recent Vandersteen speaker ad John Atkinson of Stereophile was quoted to say, "Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. ... musically perfect .. across the board."

Outlandish claims like these are just nonsense and they do absolutely nothing to give this industry any credibility. And they hope that we don't question them.

If there were any truth to such claims we could have all purchased Memorex cassette cartridges and called it a day after their infamous 1970's commercials, "Is it live or is it Memorex?" starring Ella Fitzgerald.
