In your OP when you said, "I'm looking to be enlightened about the proliferation of USB DACs..", I saw it a computer related inquire. Everyone with a soundcard is a pontential customer!
You'll have excuse me when I tell you I don't understand, "Ok, but what if someone does NOT want to interface with a computer???" Perhaps I'm presumptuous in thinking that "someone" is you. If so, I can't ascertain if you're being genuine to my perception of your OP.
