Me too. The innate media capabilities are exposed by how good the best ones sound. Fortunately I find they can be quite satisfying although a good higher resolution recording can do it with more finesse.
Horrible QC can lead to hideously un-listenable records.
Too true! I went on strike for years buying no LPs except for a few 'audiophile' records such as Sheffield Labs. Many were not just a little off but were total crap that had the grooves melted, were shaped like potato chips had regrind chunks the size of icecubes. Well, maybe small icecubes...
So, naturally, I was an early CD adopter because I became starved for new recordings. And I still have 'em all and listen to them. The ones done since maybe 1992 do tend to sound better as the technology was maturing but my very first one still plays good as new. Thought I've verify that so I just dug it out and am now listening as I type (Also Sprach Zarathurstra/Ozawa 1981). Thirty years old, zero maintenance. What a medium! But I do think that 'new' would have been better with today's converters, for one thing they wouldn't have felt the need to run them into clipping...
