Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: just my 2 pennies

Hi Gordon:

Excellent and informative post.

I basically agree with most of what you say. But I have
several points that I see a little differently.

1-It has been long said that SPDIF is inherently flawed. But...I and many others have heard excellent results using this connection, and their have been some very expensive and very good 2 box disc spinners and DACs that use this connection that sounded fantastic. That being said, I had an engineering friend of mine say that BNC should have been the digital connection of choice all these years because it is "proper" from at technical standpoint.

2-I don't believe most Redbook CDs are made from 88.2 or 176.4 masters. I am a fierce liner note reader and I also read Mix magazine and I would say that 90% of Redbook CDs are mastered from 96Khz masters. Some huge profile projects that were mastered from non multiples of Redbook are the Beatles CDS (192Khz), The Doors (96Khz), Plant & Krauss (96Khz), and a ton more.

3-95% of the NON loss-less music available for purchase is still in physical format. So you still need physical discs to load up, and a reliable bit perfect ripper. As far as listening "more music" I find that
a bit ironic, as a huge number of people moving to servers are also into Vinyl (Mike Fremer, Art Dudley!)which is NOT quick access.

BTW, your mention of a souped MAC mini as a formidable source is interesting, because that may be my next step. At CES there were a few companies offering MAC mini mods.

Thanks again.
