The effect would also be slowed transients, that would affect the top end. Capacitor-coupled tube units often get compromised at both ends of the frequency spectrum.

What I hope is that the lack of drive ability with the tubes wasn't intended to act as a "post filter", which can make component matching (and also cable selection) very finicky.
