Audio Note Dac Zero

I got an Audio Note Dac Zero from Audiogon for not a lot of money. It's not supposed to be my ultimate digital solution, so I am not expecting a whole lot. But on first listening to it, (after about a 15 minute warm-up), I am not satisfied at all---the sound is extremely lean. For example, piano notes below middle C have very little impact. The deep bass is actually there. It's the upper bass/lower mids that are weak.

I am comparing it to my Naim CD5x. Maybe the Naim is just a particularly warm player and I am used to it---but I don't think that's the issue, because the Dac Zero really has little impact on midbass notes.

I wonder if the tube in the Dac Zero is old. It uses a single 6111 WA sub-miniature tube that is soldered. Perhaps it has never been changed over the nine-year life of this unit. I wonder if that could upset the tonal balance.

Any ideas?
