Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: Used cd players -- safe bet ?

It will always be a concern since many manufacturers are not able to support legacy cd transports like the once great Philips CD-9 Pro. Some of the manufacturers have gone to developing players based on DVD drives. That is certainly one way to go but is it the best answer? It was high time for me to replace my aging rotel 975 and Muse Dac. I went to many hi fi stores and auditioned many cd players in the $2-3K range overall I wasn't very impressed. I'm not a fan of upsampling in photography and in music reproduction. A friend told me about pc audio as a digital source. I wanted to stay away from upsampling and chose a non sampling dac, the Nixon TubeDAC with my Mac Mini. There are more expensive non sampling dacs from Wavelength. My feeling is that it gets you out from under the next great player and lets you concentrate your efforts on enjoying the music.
