"Even the very best digital, which I believe to be SACD, sounds to my ears more like open-reel tape rather than vinyl".For something to sound as good as an original tape is, in my mind, pretty good. If in your case vinyl sounds "better", IMHO all you have really done is introduce euphonic distortion products near the end of the food chain. If you like that, no problem. It does not result in a more accurate representation of the original sound field. In my view, the best sounding analog LP's had to be the old Sheffield Labs Direct to disc recordings of the late seventies, and early eighties. XRCD's derived from the simultaneous analog tape can come pretty close (try the XRCD 24 of the Drum and Track Record), but not quite, to capturing this magic.
