My findings—and they are purely anecdotal—would seem to support the fact that:1. to achieve high-quality digital sound, a lot of money needs to be thrown at the problem—or at least that's been my experience, and
2. even at that level, digital doesn't sound like analog; it just gets closer, via a very different route, to the sound of live instruments playing in a real space.
Even the very best digital, which I believe to be SACD, sounds to my ears more like open-reel tape rather than vinyl. And in the case of DSD derived from analog tape masters, that may signify that we're moving ever-closer to the sound of the original source material, rather than moving toward vinyl, per se.
