I think so. I owned the original Planet many moons ago and a friend just brought over his 8260 several weeks back to compare against a Sony 2000ES I bought for the secondary basement system and my Modwright XA-777ES. I think he is going to buy the new Marantz 9500 universal and sell his 8260. The next generation Rega is in the same price range or you could try one of the more reasonable universal players along with an outboard DAC.
